“Lithuania-Extended Euro-Integration Support is Extremely Important to Moldova,” says Vladimir Voronin

President Valdas Adamkus met Moldova’s President Vladimir Voronin who arrived in Vilnius on a working visit.The Lithuanian president voiced support to Moldova’s aspiration for Euro-integration and inquired about the assistance required to continue the reform process in Moldova.

The two presidents agreed that it was necessary to start thinking about extending the EU-Moldovan dialogue after their partnership and cooperation treaty ends in 2008.

Valdas Adamkus offered support by Lithuanian experts for Moldova’s domestic reforms which would open up better prospects for maintaining relations between the European Union and Moldova.

“Lithuania speaks out for applying a facilitated visa regime to Moldovan citizens when they travel to EU countries,” said Mr. Adamkus.

President Adamkus said that Moldova should grant the European Union the same preferential status in trade like the one given to the Balkan countries.

“Lithuania-extended Euro-integration support is extremely important to Moldova,” said Vladimir Voronin.Among the other issues discussed at the meeting was the problem of Transnistria. “Lithuania – like the entire European Union – expects this question to be settled in a transparent way and with the participation of all interested parties,” said Mr. Adamkus.

The Moldovan president invited Valdas Adamkus to continue their informal meetings and visit Chisinau at a time most favorable for him.
