World Bank announces Partial Cancellation of the Loan for the Road Sector Program Support Project in Moldova

The World Bank regrets to announce that it has had to cancel an amount equivalent to US$ 11 million from a US$ 16 million International Development Association (IDA) credit for the Government's Road Sector Program because of misprocurement.

The World Bank takes very seriously the transparency, competitiveness and fairness in the procurement process used to award contracts under its financing.  The World Bank procurement rules, which are binding for all World Bank financed contracts, ensure this and their violation leaves the Bank no other choice than to cancel the respective financing amount.

The Road Sector Program Support Project in Moldova was approved by the World Bank Board of Directors in March 2007. The International Development Association of the World Bank Group provided credit in the amount of US$ 16 million to assist the Government in improving the condition and quality of its road network and the way it is managed.

The World Bank's credit includes funding for other activities in the Road Sector, such as technical assistance to the Ministry of Construction and Territorial Development and to the State Road Administration, which will continue to be implemented.
