'The European Union continues to be ready to cooperate with the Republic of Moldova in conformity with the European values and principles and is engaged to further consolidate relations with the Republic of Moldova', the same press release informs.

For EU, according to the release, it is essential (that the Republic of Moldova) has good relations with its neighbors. 'Grasping the complexity of the Moldovan-Romanian relations, we urge the Government of Moldova to resume normal relations with Romania. We call for the Moldovan authorities to observe all constitutional freedoms and all the sides to prove restraint, renouncing to all forms of violence', the release further says.

The EU Czech Presidency stated on Wednesday evening it was deeply concerned over the evolutions in the Republic of Moldova following the parliamentary elections on April 5 and urged the Government, opposition and population in this country to prove restraint, renouncing to all sort of actions which might inflame the situation.

'The EU Council Presidency continues to monitor with deep concern the evolutions in the Republic of Moldova following elections on April 5. The Presidency urges the Government of Moldova, the opposition and the population in this country to prove restraint from any action conducive to increased tensions and accentuates that all solutions to the current situation must be based on peaceful dialogue and respect of the rule of law. The EU Presidency calls all the sides to demonstrate their firm pledge with the European values and principles. In the current situation, respect for the freedom of the press and for the freedom of expression are especially important', underlined the Czech EU Presidency in its statement.

In the afternoon, the European Commission announced during the daily press conference that the ambassadors of the EU member states in Chisinau reunited in order to examine the situation created by the opposition's violent demonstrations, disputing the ruling communists' victory in the legislative elections on April 5. The announcement was made by Christiane Hohmann, the spokesperson of the European Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy, who also stressed that the EU special representative to the Republic of Moldova, Kalman Mizsei, is in his turn in Chisinau for consultations with the ambassadors.
