Moldova sets date for fresh poll

Moldova's President Vladimir Voronin has dissolved parliament and called fresh elections, two months after the last vote sparked riots on the streets.

The move was constitutionally required after parliament twice failed to vote in a new president to replace him.

Opposition parties had boycotted the votes, in protest at the election they believe was rigged.

Mr Voronin said a new vote would take place on 29 July, and warned voters that the opposition wanted "chaos".

"The atmosphere for this election is much worse than it was before the April election. The opposition wants destabilisation, chaos and the defeat of Moldova," he said.
