Moldova, Romania will free travel for citizens

Moldova and Romania have signed an agreement that will allow Moldovans to travel to parts of Romania without a visa.

Moldovans who live near the Romanian border will be able travel 30 kilometers (18 miles) inside Romania with a special permit. Normally, Moldovans need visas because Romania is a member of the European Union.

The agreement will ease travel restrictions for families with relatives on each side of the border. Most Moldovans are of Romanian descent and people in the two countries speak the same language.

The agreement signed Tuesday by Moldovan Foreign Minister Iurie Leanca and Romanian foreign ministry official Robert Cazanciuc allows for the opening of two Romanian consuls in Moldova and two Moldovan consuls in Romania.
