Romania's new president will have to have a strategic partnership with the Republic of Moldova, relying on an extremely tight economic partnership between the two countries, Social Democratic Party (PSD) president Mircea Geoana told the Invest Energy Forum, on Monday.
According to him, for very many times, the relationship with the Republic of Moldova has been judged in the light of our common history, and of a certain type of geopolitical competition in the region. ‘I believe that the new government, and I hope the new President, very soon, they can have a dialogue with the fresh authorities in Bucharest, about a strategic partnership with a very important economic accent. We can be mutually useful to one another. On the both banks of the Prut river, we can build a zone of cooperation and mutual support, and of access to the European market for the Republic of Moldova and of access to the (Commonwealth of Independent States) CIS market, for Romania,‘ PSD official said.
In the context, Geoana pleaded for a stronger economic emphasis on the relationship between Romania and the Republic of Moldova.
‘I think Romania has the obligation to support the Republic of Moldova at this difficult moments. The EU, the IMF and other powers understood that the Republic of Moldova had to be supported, ‘ added Geoana.
PSD president opines that Romania, beyond the difficulties it has been experiencing, will have to find resources to back up its friends of the Republic of Moldova, during these crisis times.
‘I am encouraged by the pragmatism and the modern manner the fresh leaders of Chisinau approach the relation with Romania, and Europe and the economic dimension, at large. I'll back up the removal of the fees for the visas between Romania and the Republic of Moldova. It is not normal to claim consular fees from the citizens who are so close to us.
To adopt rapidly a law on citizenship and to lift visa fees represent a first gesture to resolve this problem. If at the first meeting between the foreign ministers of our countries, we can sign an accord on the small traffic, we will be able to facilitate this to the community, and the families living near the border, and who have difficulties in meeting and visiting each others,' Mircea Geoana said.
