EU to help Eastern Neighbours improve waste governance

The European Commission has launched a new regional project aimed at improving waste governance within the countries on the EU's eastern borders. A press release on the website of the EU Delegation in Belarus says the project called "Waste Governance - ENPI East" aims to support Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine in their efforts to reduce the risks arising from inappropriate management of wastes.

The project funded by the EU with a budget of €5.9 million will address the problem of waste through co-operation with, and amongst, partner states in the region. It will help improve the management of waste by promoting higher standards at waste facilities, more effective waste prevention initiatives, increased capacities for waste collection and sorting as well as increasing re-use, recovery, and safe disposal of waste.

The project is expected to draft pilot regional inventories of existing illegal/non-compliant disposal sites; help adopt a concerted waste classification approach in line with international and EU standards; assist in working out waste management strategies for each of the identified pilot cities and carry out a feasibility study in establishing a "DABLAS type" platform for encouraging strategic waste management investments.
The project will be implemented by a Consortium led by Spain's Eptisa, with the regional partners mainly represented by the Ministries of Environment of the Partner Countries.
