On Thuesday, 2 February 2010, a new EU-funded regional project aimed at improving waste governance within the countries of the European Neighborhood and Partnership Region (ENPI East) will be launched in Chisinau.
The project called "Waste Governance - ENPI East" aims at assisting through technical co-operation and support the partner countries in their efforts to reduce the risks arising from inappropriate management of wastes, that thereby create environmental pollution hazards to the community and to natural resources, through co-operation with, and amongst, partner states in the region.
The main Project Partner in Moldova is the Ministry of Environment.
The project's specific objective is to improve the management of waste by promoting higher standards at waste facilities, more effective waste prevention initiatives, increased capacities for waste collection and sorting as well as increasing re-use, recovery, and safe disposal of waste. The intended results of the project are: Completed pilot region inventories of existing illegal/non-compliant disposal sites; An adopted waste classification approach that accords with international and EU standards; Completed, 15-year, waste management strategies for each of the identified pilot cities; and Feasibility study in establishing a "DABLAS type" platform for encouraging strategic waste management investments.
The Consortium entrusted by the Commission to implement the project is headed by Eptisa (a leading Spanish international consultancy). Other members of the Consortium are Project Management Group (Ireland), Fichtner (Germany), PlanMiljo (Denmark), Regional Environmental Centre for the Caucasus (Georgia), and Wasteaware (United Kingdom).
