On Thursday, November 18, 2010, the United States Senate passed a resolution recognizing Moldova's democratic accomplishments and expressing its support for free and transparent elections. With the passage of this resolution, the U.S. Senate commended Moldova for the extraordinary progress it has made in strengthening democracy and a market economy. The U.S. Senate praised Moldova for the substantial reforms it has undertaken recently to implement far-reaching legal reforms, curb corruption, and strengthen the capacity of civil society and the media. The U.S. Senate expressed its belief that the free and fair conduct of parliamentary elections in Moldova will contribute to a strong and stable government that will be responsible to the vital needs of the Moldovan people. Senator John Kerry (D-MA) said, "The people and the government of Moldova have overcome a daunting set of economic and political challenges. The success of these elections is important, not only for Moldova, but for the region as a whole. On November 28, I hope the people of Moldova have an election of the highest democratic standard that will produce a government capable of continuing necessary reforms." Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN) said, "Since independence in 1991, Moldova has made notable progress in establishing a democratic political system and a free market economy. This resolution reaffirms the United States Senate's support for political reform and fair democratic processes with our partners in Moldova and recognizes the important steps Moldova has recently made towards European integration. I am hopeful that the upcoming election can serve as a foundation for reform-minded leaders in Moldova to make further progress toward this goal."
