Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued today the following statement:
“I warmly welcome the decision of the “5+2” negotiating format, taken this morning in Moscow, to resume official negotiations disrupted in February 2006. This is an important step towards a peaceful, comprehensive and lasting settlement of the Transnistria conflict.
We are now looking forward to a negotiating process in which all the parties involved in the “5+2” will act in good faith and in a spirit of cooperation. As part of the "5+2" negotiating format, the EU expects the next, official meeting to take place at the earliest possible date, and reaffirms its readiness to assist the conflict sides in both the negotiations and the implementation of a settlement.”.
