Romanian President Traian Basescu called new President of the Republic of Moldova Nicolae Timofti over the phone on Friday to communicate him a message of congratulations and to assure him of his support for pursuing with the country's internal reforms and the reforms meant to get it closer to the European Union.
'On the occasion of the discussion that took place shortly after the confirmation of Mr Timofti's having been elected to the top position of the neighbouring state, President Basescu wished him success in achieving his mandate and assured him of his full support for the continuation of the internal reforms and the reforms meant to get the country closer to the European Union. The head of state underscored the major importance of the election of the president in the Republic of Moldova, which has allowed breaking the institutional deadlock created over the last three years', the Presidential Administration announced.
The Romanian leader also congratulated the Chisinau political class for the agreement expressed in Parliament on Friday.
Judge Nicolae Timofti, the chairman of the Superior Council of Magistracy, on Friday was elected President of the Republic of Moldova by the vote of 62 deputies in the Chisinau Parliament, after a nearly three-year political crisis during which the Moldovan lawmakers failed to elected a head of state.
