Republic of Moldova president to pay official visit to Bucharest on Thursday

Republic of Moldova president to pay official visit to Bucharest on Thursday

The Republic of Moldova's President Nicolae Timofti will pay an official visit to Romania on Thursday on an invitation from President Traian Basescu.

The agenda of the visit schedules official talks between the two heads of state, to be followed by a joint press declaration, the Presidential Administration announced.

'During the talks with the president of Romania, tackled will be topics on the bilateral agenda, the Republic of Moldova's European prospects as well as topical issues on the international agenda', the source said.

The Moldovan leader will also meet Romanian Speaker of the Deputies' Chamber Roberta Anastase and Senate President Vasile Blaga as well as Patriarch Daniel of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

Timofti had told Agerpres ahead of the visit to Bucharest that the political changes in Romania will not affect the relations with the Republic of Moldova.

'The change of governments in one country or another cannot influence the relations between two countries, particularly if the relations rely on well-considered and determined principles. Furthermore, Romania's foreign policy does not change when the government is changed, the more so with respect to the Republic of Moldova', Timofti had said.

He stressed he plans to discuss with the Bucharest officials the development of the relations between the two neighbours and to persuade them the Republic of Moldova is a credible partner.

Timofti's visit to Bucharest is his second trip abroad since having been elected Moldovan president on March 16, after a visit to Brussels on April 26-27. Timofti, shortly after having been elected president, said he is in favour of close ties with Romania. Agerpres
