President Basescu received Moldovan PM Vlad Filat at Cotroceni Palace

President Traian Basescu on Friday afternoon received at the Cotroceni presidential palace Republic of Moldova Prime Minister Vladimir Filat, whom he thanked for the prompt measures taken by the Chisinau government to reverse the decision to expel the Romanian Ambassador, resume visa issues to Romanians and approve the opening of the two Romanian consulates in Cahul and Balti.

'The opening of the necessary voting stations so that the Moldovan citizens with voting right be able to participate in the President's election add to these actions,' the Moldovan Premier completed. Basescu assured Filat of his openness towards the Republic of Moldova and the Chisinau government.

'We hope a President takes over in Moldova for a regular term, whoever this is. We are highly pleased with the stance acting President Ghimpu has on Romania and I never allowed myself any statement that could generate the least suspicion about our intentions regarding the relationship with the Republic of Moldova. I assure you that now, towards the end of my tenure, an atmosphere sets in I would have wanted to last all through my term in relation with the Republic of Moldova,' said Traian Basescu.

The new Moldovan premier was for the first time in Bucharest since he was sworn in in September 2009. He participated in the Summit of the Central European Initiative Summit, on which occasion he had high-level bilateral meetings and signed the Agreement on small border traffic, whose negotiation had been delayed by the former communist authorities
Relations between Romania and Republic of Moldova, relaunched in Bucharest
The signing of the agreement between the Romanian and Moldovan Governments on border traffic is a sign of the relaunch of the ties between the two states, after the power change in Chisinau, said on Friday interim PM Emil Boc in a joint press conference with Moldovan counterpart, Vlad Filat. PM Emil Boc also said that by the discussions of Bucharest, the two states relaunched the economic ties, the cultural, diplomatic ties, by a range of joint projects. At the same time, the two officials established the resumption of the activity of the joint committees in joint fields such as energy, SMEs, in the cultural and diplomatic sector. Romania has already designated general consuls for the two consulates of the cities of Cahul and Balti, which are to start activity in January 2010 at the latest.

The Romanian Premier thanked his Moldovan counterpart for the policy of opening which he immediately promoted after his installation and for the cancellation of the decisions taken by the communist authorities by which former ambassador of Romania to the Republic of Moldova had been declared persona non-grata.

In turn, Moldovan Premier Vlad Filat said that he was very excited when he arrived in Romania and said that the new ruling is aware of the responsibility it has for relaunching the Moldovan-Romanian ties, deteriorated during the communist ruling.

'We are aware of the responsibility we have for relaunching our relations, which have to be natural and of the responsibility Moldova has to have for the European integration, so that the Moldovan citizens benefit from rights, liberties and European values,' said Vlad Filat.'I am confident our future will be to the benefit of our citizens,' said the Moldovan Premier.
